Despite the weather that was thrown at us yesterday we had an interesting day with the North Pennines AONB looking at the excavation and restoration work being carried out at the Allen Smelt Mill and then walking along the line of the flue up to the chimneys high on the fells.

This smelt mill is probably the largest remaining evidence of this massive part of our industrial heritage and provides an insight into ore hearth smelt mills going back to the 16th century and the miles of flue systems are incredibly well preserved.

As work progresses this site will greatly enhance a historical visit to the area when combined with Killhope and Nenthead museums.
