ABOUT SUNRISE COTTAGE

Sunrise Cottage was constructed at least 200 years ago, though it is believed to be older.  It has some features of a bastle house (a defensive building against reivers from both sides of the border). Over the years, the original one-up, one-down farmhouse grew, gaining a kitchen/scullery, an attached byre for the livestock, and a large barn.  In 2006 both these latter buildings were converted into a house (Valley View) which is where the current owners live.  Although attached, the thick walls and private outdoor space mean that there is no danger of noise or interruptions from next door; and we are close should you need any local knowledge or help with anything.

Outside there is plenty of off-road parking.  The front door leads through a small porch into the stone-flagged and beamed lounge with a multi-fuel stove (coal is provided in the bunker outside).  Through the lounge is the fully-equipped kitchen which also contains the dining table and gives views over the valley.

From the kitchen, the back porch opens on to a private sloping garden, with a flat area at the top with seating and a barbeque.  The garden is grassed, with a small orchard in the bottom section, and offers pleasant views of the Nent valley.

The downstairs twin bedroom is next to the lounge, and contains the remains of a large old stone fireplace.  A doorway leads off the lounge to the old stone staircase, leading to the main bedroom with its four-poster bed, and large family bathroom.

We are on a small access road, which serves a few local farms and houses.  There is almost no traffic, mostly horses and the local farmer's quads.  Footpaths lead off in all directions, including down into the village where you can get a great cooked breakfast!

Please be aware that the cottage is very old and contains uneven stone flags and steps, along with some low beams in places.  As such it may not be suitable for those with restricted mobility - but please feel free to drop us a line and we'll do out best to accommodate you if we can.

Well behaved dogs are welcome - in fact most of our guests are dog owners.  We charge a small extra fee for each dog, and would ask that they are not allowed in the bedrooms.  And of course they have the run of the garden.
